The challenge
Like many treatment providers, Oregon Recovery faced persistent challenges in engaging and retaining DUI clients. Transportation barriers, work schedules, and limited access to in-person services made it difficult for some clients to fully participate.
Post-COVID, telehealth had become more accepted, but Oregon Recovery needed a structured, reliable solution to meet state requirements, deliver psychoeducation, and hold clients accountable while maintaining accessibility.
"The online part is really important for our DUI clients," said Clinical Director Les Streeter. "And some people don't have availability at certain times or travel a lot, but they can still do an online group. So this solves a lot of those problems. [Online groups] have become a necessity for our mandated clients."
The approach
Oregon Recovery introduced Atlas as part of its DUI group programming, pairing the platform's Responsible Decisions and My Life in Recovery curricula with weekly one-hour online groups.
Clients complete assignments in Atlas on their own time, then bring their reflections into group prepared to reflect and apply the material. Staff use Atlas's dashboard to monitor participation and engagement, reinforcing accountability and providing timely interventions. "Behaviorally, it's really helpful. If someone's falling behind or only partially completing an assignment, I can see that and follow up right away," said Streeter.
Oregon Recovery also values Atlas's built-in safety features, including flags for potential self-harm. "If it's flagged, we can check right away," Streeter noted. "That's extremely helpful for monitoring and making sure clients are getting what they need."
Outcomes and next steps
Though still early in implementation, Atlas has shown significant benefits:
- Reduced recidivism: Journals focused on coping skills, CBT, and thinking errors are helping clients develop skills that staff say likely play a "significant" role in reducing recidivism.
- Improved access: DUI clients without transportation or with demanding schedules can now meet participation requirements.
- High engagement: Over a recent 90-day period, Atlas participants logged 1,417 hours across 963 sessions, with a 96% engagement rate.
-
Measurable client impact: In a survey administered to clients:
- 100% found Atlas to be helpful.
- 84% said Atlas helped them work toward their treatment goals.
- 84% said Atlas helped them learn more about themselves.
- Regulatory compliance: Journals in Atlas align with Oregon's statutory requirements for DUI programs, making it easy to comply with state programming mandates.
"I think it's supporting all the clients we have," said Les. "The material is spot on… and helping them with their specific needs."
Oregon Recovery is now preparing to expand Atlas beyond the Lake Oswego pilot site. The organization also sees potential for using Atlas with self-referred clients, not just mandated populations.
